A few months ago I was writing about the things I miss about work when I am home. Today I am continuing the article started back then, with the top 10 things I miss about home when I am onboard working.
So here it goes:
#1 My Family & Friends
I know that any seaman or seawoman will agree with me on this one, is not easy being far away from your loved ones! No matter how close you are to them or not, the feeling of missing them it is always there. No matter how many contracts you have done until then, it is never easy. The moment you get used to them again at home, you have to leave and the other way around. We are always looking forward to seeing our loved ones and hug them one more time!
#2 The Food
Oh the food! Nothing compares to your local dishes or snacks, especially the ones home made (mom knows better). The first weeks at home I crave for everything at the same time. Lessons learned: don’t leave me alone in a supermarket during my first week home!
#4 The Free and Fast Internet
And Romania has one of the best and fastest wifi networks in the world. From my experience and having to travel to so many places, trust me when I say, there is nothing like the Romanian wifi! Looking forward for the days when cruise ships will have free wifi. It’s the 2018 after all and we all need it!
#5 My House
Love my house and the feeling of home it gives me. There is nothing like that feeling and there is nothing like my couch too!!
#5 Doing Sweet Nothing
Talking about my couch, I think this one it’s pretty obvious. How relaxing it is to not having a schedule, things to do, work to be done etc and instead you only get to relax. One of the perks of not having kids yet I guess!
#6 Driving a Car
Vrum vrum.. who doesn’t miss driving their own car at home and that feeling of freedom on the highway?
#7 Having meal options at any time of the day
10 am, 11 am, 4pm, 5pm, midnight, 1am anytime of the day! Being able to eat something other than Pringles at any time of the day or night is a treat that I, personally, miss a lot when I am onboard.
#8 Evening City Lights
I have always enjoyed overnights in our ports of call. There is just something about being able to go for a evening walk or dinner. Cruise ships usually arrive early in a port and leave somewhere around 5pm thus, we spend the evening time sailing.
#9 Being Able to Go on Trips
If you wake up one morning and decide it is a good time to go on a road trip, you just do it! That’s the fun of being in vacation at home.
#10 Wearing Normal Clothes
From jeans, dresses, heals or slippers I always miss wearing my normal clothes. As much as I enjoy the uniform, after a few months of wearing the same thing every day, it’s not fun anymore. The other challenge is that I never get to wear all the clothes I buy due to the lack of time. I challenged myself in the last months to limit the amount of clothes I am buying since I never get enough time to wear them anyway. So far is been going good!
So there you have it. If there is something else you want to add to the list, feel free to add it in a comment below.
Isn’t it funny how we always miss the sea when we are at home and when we are onboard we miss our homes? One of the burdens a sailors has to live with.
